2022.01.18 13:22 sumonewhoisntme I'm jumping aboard the FIRE wagon in my late 20s... how much should I plan to save/invest annually?

I don't have a high paying job, and I only have ~$15k saved up. I regret neglecting my financial literacy earlier on in life. I've always been very frugal, but I didn't start reading up on personal finance and early retirement strategies until fairly recently. Does anyone have any overall advice for saving / investing as a beginner? Thanks!

2022.01.18 13:22 DarkEvilHedgehog Does it bug anyone else how quickly Kvothe learns anything and everything?

I just finished book two. It's been a really enjoyable series to read, but one thing which bugs me is how quickly Kvothe is meant to be learning things. Whether it's at the university or his sign language, he only needs to do everything once and then he's memorized it forever. Simultaneously he's plowing through dozen of academic books per afternoon. This to me doesn't seem realistic whatsoever, and the most fantastical of all things in the book. Kvothe doesn't need to revise or whatever, just once quick glance at anything and he's an expert.
Sure, Kvothe might be a genius, but at times his study method is simply way too unrealistic.

2022.01.18 13:22 EquivalentInflation American Dad: One of Roger's (unknown) powers is to emit a low grade hypnotic suggestion that allows his disguises to work.

One of Roger's biggest personality traits is his thousands of alternate personalities. He wears different clothes, gives himself an ostentatious name, and suddenly becomes indistinguishable from any other person. The family and the audience can see him normally, but to everyone around him, he looks like a human, to the point where he can get multiple valid IDs for his personalities without issue. The strange part is, people recognize his inhuman traits. His lack of a nose gets called out by a young boy in the Kevin Bacon episode, and by his fiancee. In addition, when they make a TV reenactment of Roger as "Little Bonnie Ramirez", the actress has a pear shaped head, just like Roger.
So, we know that some people can see individual parts of Roger's true form, but they somehow can't manage to connect the dots. Something is mentally keeping them from putting them together, and they just treat every weird trait of his as separate from the others.
We also know that even the family can't see through some of the disguises. Stan doesn't recognize Roger at the country club, Haley doesn't recognize her sandal repairman, Francine doesn't recognize him as a pool player, and Steve didn't recognize Roger as his ex-girlfriend (despite seven/nine dates). When we see Roger's disguise from Steve's perspective, she looks completely normal, with a nose, no weird head, non-grey skin, etc.
So, what's the explanation?
One of Roger's many supernatural powers is to emit a general hypnotic suggestion that mentally suggests to people that he looks normal. The hypnosis may even be based in some kind of phermone, given that Roger has a history of releasing various weird bodily fluids and oozes. However, the hypnosis isn't that strong. If Roger is just walking around without a disguise, he can still be recognized immediately. The hypnosis feeds off of the power of suggestion. Similar to real life hypnosis, there are limits, and the suggestion becomes stronger with plausibility. It's far easier to believe that the person you just walked by has a slightly weird head and skin tone, rather than that they're an alien. People see what they expect to see.
This is also the reason that (mostly) the family can see through his disguises. They're around Roger so much that they build up a sort of general immunity. Roger also doesn't need to hide from him, so they may even be fooled by the hypnosis at first, but then recognize the personality as one of Roger's. Once again, similarly to real life hypnosis, all of the personalities that they couldn't see through were unexpected places for Roger to show up.
This hypnosis explains how Roger manages to fit his way into the world: the hypnotic suggestion makes people less suspicious, and allows him to sneak his way in. Roger was shown having a wife and two human kids in the past, playing the role of both mother and son (with a human brother), being someone's child, and many, many more. The hypnosis allows him to worm his way into the world, with people not questioning why they didn't remember having a kid up until now.

2022.01.18 13:22 sodium_for_you what even is gender

(tw: gender dysphoria)
I am super confused on who I am at the moment. I'm pretty sure I'm asexual (still confused about romantic attraction and stuff but whatever) but now I don't know my gender. To clarify, I'm afab.
When I was younger, I was never too uncomfortable with being called a girl (though I was definitely a tomboy, not caring much for stereotypically feminine things but still just going along with whatever). That's still true, I'm okay with it, but I despise being called a "woman" or a "lady" for whatever reason. I hate being called "miss" as well. It just makes me feel uncomfortable and gross (dysphoric? maybe?). I'm also fine with being considered "feminine," but I abhor wearing dresses and having long hair; both make me feel very uncomfortable. My voice is okay for the most part (since it's mostly neutral, though I'd like it a little bit deeper). Being referred to with she/her pronouns is fine but if it's repeated over a period of time it can be exhausting (similarly to being referred to as a girl in any way, it gets me all fatigued for some reason). I despise being called by my (dead)name and hate any nickname-y variations of it.
I'm fine with going into the women's bathroom, but I'm also fine with going into the men's bathroom (though going into the men's makes me feel a bit uncomfortable because I know I don't look like one and I'm scared of someone seeing me). I don't have much body dysphoria (aside from feeling weird about my chest and disliking my curves), but I do feel disconnected from my body, if that makes sense. Like I don't feel like it's me at times. I don't know if I'd want male genitalia, specifically, but I'm not attached to mine at all. This is a weaker point but I've taken many gender quizzes and it's usually male, masculine, or demiguy.
I don't know if I'm a trans guy or non-binary or demigender or something else, but I always get insanely euphoric whenever someone refers to me with they/them or, even more so, he/him (or refer to me as "sir," even by accident). I haven't tried binders but I always dress so that my chest is as non-visible as possible (my style is mostly androgynous or masculine). I just... I don't know. Any sort of advice would be SUPER helpful.

Thanks

2022.01.18 13:22 SquareKey261 Some harmonizing tips from "Versace on the floors"

Link to the music video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FyjEnoIgTM&ab_channel=BrunoMars

One of the reasons why this song is so satisfying to listen to is because Bruno didn't use simple "ABC" chord progression, but made it immensely dynamic by utilizing advanced harmonization. Here are a few takeaways:
Intro "0:47"
Bruno seemed to have played Gmaj7 - Fm7 - Cdim7- F#7 - Bm7 on his left hand. Notice the very brief Cdim7 didn't have to be there. He could have just played Gmaj7 - Fm7 - F#7 Bm7. However, the Cdim7 elevated tension nicely for a split second, which shared the tension note "Bb" with F#7, then resolved to a "B".
"1:32"
At "underneath the chandelier" Bruno played a C6 (instead of Am) which goes to Bb7. Notice the C6 and Bb7 shared the seemingly unstable note of "A". Which goes to "B", creating some kind of movement without resolving.
"1:43 - 1:53"
From "there's no reason to hide" Bruno played "Em7 / Bm7 / Asus 4 / A." So why not just play "Em / Bm / A?" It sounds the same right?
What to take note of here is the chords Em7 / Bm7 / Asus 4 all share the note "D". Bruno was able to hold the tension at this "D" for 3 bars before eventually resolving to "Db".
"1:53-2:14" the final part before the chorus
From"Turn down the lights" I think Bruno played "Gadd9 A/G Gmaj7 Am7 D G". All the first three chords held the "G" in the bass, in which the first two chords held the tension note "A", which moved to "B" at Gmaj7 to elevate the tension, then finally resolved at "G" at Am7.
